Shoo, fly

I've been contemplating nursery rhymes, lately. We have a couple of childrens' CD's and while I enjoy relearning some of these old songs, I think I need to do some historical checking. I say that because some of them don't make sense.

"Shoo, fly, don't bother me; cause I belong to somebody."

I don't get it. Later on in the song it says "I feel like a morning star"

What's that all about - what does it mean to feel like a morning star?!

I know that some nursery rhymes have quite dreadful histories - like "ring-around-the-rosie"

If anyone knows the mystery behind this song, I'd be quite happy to hear it - otherwise, I'm going to have to do some investigating on my own.

Good AM (we are bracing for THE storm!!! 5 - 9 inches, perhaps). I agree with you on the nursery rhymes...from what I gather, most of them were written to make fun of the (British) government...(Humpty Dumpty is the first one to come to mind) Shoo, Fly sounds more "American", but I don't have a clue.... Be interesting to see the coming posts!
